Tedesco per nascita, Wals era una figura chiave nella generazione di pittori del Nord che presero gli antichi monumenti e rovine della campagna romana come loro soggetto. Tra il 1620 e il 1622 insegnò a Claude Lorrain di recente arrivato, influenzando notevolmente il metodo di disegno dell’artista più giovane direttamente dalla natura come passo prima di dipingere paesaggi in studio. Wals si è specializzato in piccoli dipinti, come questo lavoro su rame, con luce solare brillante e atmosfere lucide. Essi guardano avanti a opere dipinte dal paesaggista francese Camille Corot durante le sue visite in Italia due secoli dopo.
