Esta obra representa un caballo noble. El caballo excelente podría correr 4.000 kilómetros al día en su juventud, pero el caballo fue descuidado mientras se envejecía. La figura de este viejo caballo inútil simboliza a los funcionarios de la dinastía Song en circunstancias similares. La pintura es elocuente con pesar por la toma por la dinastía Yuan gobernada por Mongolia, y nostalgia por la dinastía Song. Esta pintura fue pasada más tarde al literati tribal Han que había trabajado para la dinastía Yuan. Entendiendo el significado implícito detrás de la pintura, estos literati escribieron sus sentimientos simpáticos como colofones. El artista Gong Kai fue un funcionario de clase baja que perdió su posición y se convirtió en pobre después de la caída del imperio.
