Questo pannello intrigante, parte ritratto e parte pittura di genere, è stato probabilmente dipinto da Coques, che si è specializzato in piccoli, finemente lavorato ritratti e gruppi familiari. Il suo stato incompiuto ci dà uno sguardo ad una pratica che potrebbe essere stata condivisa da altri artisti olandesi in cui l'artista ha dipinto le teste e gli oggetti in una stanza—qui la poltrona ben osservata rivestita di velluto e gli strumenti relativi al compito di scrittura—mentre lasciando l'abbigliamento maschile a livello di underdrawing. Forse a questo punto un assistente di studio avrebbe preso il dipinto.
