Gu Yun nació en Suzhou pero pasó sus años artísticos maduros en la vibrante comunidad artística de finales del siglo XIX Shanghai. Aunque algunos pintores de Shangai en ese momento estaban experimentando con estilos audaces y sueltos, Gu produjo muchas obras que eran relativamente restringidas y conservadoras. Según su inscripción, basó esta pintura en la forma del pintor del siglo XIV Ma Wan, un seguidor algo oscuro de Huang Gongwang.
