Il soggetto eroticamente carico ed emotivamente coinvolgente di Cagnacci appellava all’immaginazione barocca in poesia, teatro e pittura. Preso dall'antico scrittore greco Plutarch's Lives, Cleopatra si suicida con un morso di vipera a seguito della sconfitta del suo amato, il romano Mark Antony. Il trattamento di Cagnacci è in debito con Guido Reni, ma la sensualità flagrante dei suoi occhi rovesciati, le guance arrossate e il seno esposto è singolare. Il serpente letale si snoda con improbabile eleganza intorno al braccio, la violenza delle sue zanne nascoste dietro la sua mano aggraziata.
