In 1920 Alma Mahler Werfel gave Schönberg the holograph fair copy of Gustav Mahler’s Rückert song, inscribing it: “Forgive me – Arnold Schönberg, that I was not always deeply loyal to you, that I allowed myself to be confused and that only in lucid moments did I fully understand what you were about–!” The orchestral song Um Mitternacht (At Midnight) is one of the many examples of Gustav Mahler’s references to religious content, which can be found above all in his symphonies. The melancholy elements of the musical material should not, however, tempt us to reduce the song to a work of religious confession. Bruno Walter read this composition as “an uplifting testimony to his [Mahler’s] firm trust in God.”
