Nel 1858 Courbet soggiornò a Francoforte dove uno studio fu messo a sua disposizione in cui i giovani pittori potevano guardarlo al lavoro. Tre immagini principali datano dal suo soggiorno a Francoforte: il cacciatore tedesco, il sigillo dei cacciatori e la donna di Francoforte. Courbet amava andare a caccia mentre soggiornava nella Franche-Comté o in Germania, ma la pittura di scene sportive di questo tipo in grande formato era una materia molto diversa e presentava una sfida notevole, che ha risolto optando per un approccio ornamentale.
