En 1858 Courbet se hospedó en Frankfurt, donde se puso a su disposición un estudio en el que jóvenes pintores podían verlo en el trabajo. Tres fotos principales datan de su estancia en Frankfurt: The German Huntsman, The Hunters' Meal y la Mujer de Frankfurt. Courbet le gustaba ir a cazar mientras permanecía en el Franche-Comté o Alemania, pero pintar escenas deportivas de este tipo en gran formato era un asunto muy diferente y presentó un reto considerable, uno que resolvió al optar por un enfoque ornamental.
