Courbet hizo esta pintura durante un viaje de 1858 a Bruselas para cultivar un mercado belga para su trabajo. Fue comisionado como retrato betrothal por el prometido del sitter, un médico originario de Alemania que pertenecía a círculos políticos progresistas, como el propio Courbet. Mostrada en Amberes en el verano de 1858, la imagen ganó elogio por su imagen franca de una mujer que no era convencionalmente hermosa, pero parecía "fuerte-voluntad... y llena de espíritu." La pintura permaneció en la familia de la niñera hasta que fue adquirida en 1907, por recomendación de Mary Cassatt, por Louisine y H.O. Havemeyer.
