Courbet machte dieses Gemälde während einer 1858 Reise nach Brüssel beabsichtigt, einen belgischen Markt für seine Arbeit zu kultivieren. Es wurde als ein betrothalisches Porträt von dem Verlobten des Sitzers in Auftrag gegeben, einem Arzt, der ursprünglich aus Deutschland stammte, der zu progressiven politischen Kreisen gehörte, wie Courbet selbst. Gezeigt in Antwerpen im Sommer 1858, das Bild verdient Lob für seine vorrechte Darstellung einer Frau, die nicht konventionell schön war, aber schien "stark-gewillt . .. und voller Geist." Das Gemälde blieb bis 1907 in der Familie des Sitten, auf Empfehlung von Mary Cassatt, von Louisine und H.O. Havemeyer.
