Questa immagine risale agli ultimi anni della vita di Courbet, dal 1873 al 1877, che ha trascorso come espatriato in Svizzera. Come molti paesaggi che ha prodotto in questo momento, è una variazione sulle raffigurazioni precedenti dell'artista del terreno amato della sua Francia natale. Al fine di pagare i suoi debiti e per soddisfare la crescente domanda di lavoro, Courbet spesso si è rivolto ai membri del suo studio per l'assistenza con tali tele. Il dipinto attuale è stato associato alla mano del suo studente Marcel Ordinaire (1848-1896).
