En estilo, escala y composición, este trabajo se asemeja fuertemente a la primera escena de caza de Courbet, The Quarry, un gran éxito en el Salón de 1857 (Museo de Bellas Artes, Boston). El lienzo actual se distingue por la inclusión de un sirviente hepático y un surtido de juego muerto: un jabalí salvaje, un perdiz, un ciervo, y una liebre, todos presentados de una manera recordando la pintura flamenca del siglo XVII. Un ávido deportista, Courbet finalmente dedicó unas ochenta imágenes al tema de la caza.
