In stile, scala e composizione, questo lavoro assomiglia fortemente la prima scena di caccia di Courbet, The Quarry, un grande successo al Salone del 1857 (Museo di Belle Arti, Boston). L'attuale tela si distingue per l'inclusione di un servitore vivo e un assortimento di giochi morti: un cinghiale, un partridge, un cervo, e una lepre, tutto presentato in modo che richiama la pittura fiamminga del XVII secolo. Un avido sportivo, Courbet alla fine dedicò alcune ottanta immagini al tema della caccia.
