Promayet, ein Geiger, der Kindheitsfreund und Schulkamerad von Courbet war, erscheint in mehreren Gemälden des Künstlers. Hier hält er sein Instrument, während er einen gefühlvollen Ausdruck annimmt, der einem kämpfenden Musiker entspricht. Dieses Bild diente als Modell für die Ähnlichkeit von Promayet im Studio des Malers von 1855 (Musée d"Orsay, Paris). Courbet borgte es von der Sitter zurück, wie er viele andere Porträts für die lebensgroße Leinwand verwendet.
