Questo è il primo nudo Courbet acquisito dagli americani Louisine (1855-1929) e H. O. Havemeyer (1847-1907), che ha accumulato una delle più grandi e rappresentative collezioni private delle opere dell'artista. La coppia acquistò il dipinto nel 1892, nonostante la disapprovazione iniziale di H. O. Havemeyer e il loro accordo reciproco per smettere di comprare nudi. Louisine Havemeyer lo considerò "una delle foto più belle che abbia mai visto", e suo marito fu presto conquistato dal lavoro. Il ramo tenuto dalla donna è spesso identificato come quello di un albero ciliegio.
