Courbet aurait peint ce paysage luxuriant à Fontcouverte, dans la région de Saintonge, dans l'ouest de la France. Au cours de l'été de 1862, il y dessine avec Louis-Augustin Auguin (1824-1904), son premier propriétaire probable. La toile peut avoir été incluse dans une exposition que Courbet et Auguin ont aidé à organiser à Saintes au début de 1863. Une autre vue de Fontcouverte a été exposée comme une collaboration entre les artistes (où elle est inconnue).
