Il tema tradizionale della balneazione femminile attrasse ripetutamente l'attenzione di Courbet negli anni 1860. Questa scena rivisita un motivo che ha emozionato un furore di polemiche quando l'artista l'ha prima broccato un decennio prima: un nudo realisticamente carnoso al bordo dell'acqua in un ambiente boscoso. Ma al momento dell’esposizione del presente lavoro, gli spettatori erano più accettanti dell’approccio di Courbet. Uno scrittore ha elogiato questa "bella ragazza" immergendo le dita dei piedi nell'acqua come "salute stessa, con una silhouette ampia e prugna . . . . Non si potrebbe essere più indipendenti o più veri."
