Die Académie Suisse war eine informelle, aber einflussreiche Pariser Kunstschule, die der junge Courbet Anfang der 1840er Jahre besuchte. Es wurde von Martin François Suisse (ca. 1781–1859) gegründet, dem Thema dieses posthumen Porträts. Suisse, selbst, war ein Künstlermodell-für-hire, einer der seltenen Profis in seinem Bereich, dessen Name ihn überlebt.
