L'Académie Suisse era una scuola d'arte parigina informale ma influente, che il giovane Courbet frequentava nei primi anni 1840. Fu fondata da Martin François Suisse (ca. 1781–1859), soggetto di questo ritratto postumo. Suisse, se stesso, era stato un modello-for-hire dell'artista, uno dei rari professionisti nel suo campo il cui nome lo sopravvive.
