Questo paesaggio, probabilmente dipinto a metà degli anni '50, sorge all'inizio di una lunga serie di viste sulla campagna della città natale di Courbet. Può essere identificato dal caratteristico campanile della chiesa che sorge sopra il gruppo di case lungo le rive del fiume Loue. La scogliera in lontananza è la Roche du Mont. Il ponte è stato tradizionalmente identificato come quello della città di Scey-en-Varais, situato a poche miglia a valle di Ornans. Courbet sentì un profondo legame con il paesaggio robusto della regione Franche-Comté, orgogliosa del suo status di outsider nei confini signorili di Parigi.
