Die unverwechselbaren Haarlinie und vollen Lippen deuten darauf hin, dass der Sitz für dieses informelle Porträt der Händler Jules Luquet sein kann, ein Unterstützer und Freund von Courbet Anfang der 1860er Jahre. In Größe, Komposition und Handhabung ist das Bild dem 1862 Porträt des Malers Auguste Fajon (Musée Fabre, Montpellier) ähnlich, und es geht wahrscheinlich um die gleiche Zeit. Courbet scheint das Format für Darstellungen von Menschen, die er gut kannte, begünstigt zu haben. Eine lose gemalte Leinwand in einer Schweizer Privatsammlung wurde als Studie für die vorliegende Arbeit identifiziert.
