El distintivo peinado receding y los labios completos sugieren que el sitter para este retrato informal puede ser el distribuidor Jules Luquet, un partidario y amigo del comienzo de Courbet en los años 1860. En tamaño, composición y manejo, la imagen es similar al retrato del artista de 1862 del pintor Auguste Fajon (Musée Fabre, Montpellier), y probablemente se fecha aproximadamente al mismo tiempo. Courbet parece haber favorecido el formato para las representaciones de personas que conocía bien. Se ha identificado un lienzo más pintado en una colección privada suiza como un estudio para el presente trabajo.
