Diversi artisti avventurarono ritratti di Mathilde Desportes, tra cui il popolare accademico Jean-Jacques Henner (1829–1905), ma suo marito, Auguste Cuoq, trovò la maggior parte inaccettabile. Questa somiglianza era tra quelli che ha rifiutato, riferito perché ha sentito che non ha adeguatamente trasmettere la bellezza della moglie. Courbet sembra aver terminato l'immagine per la sua soddisfazione nel 1857, la data in cui l'ha assegnato nel catalogo della mostra personale che ha montato a Parigi nel 1867.
