Mehrere Künstler wagten Porträts von Mathilde Desportes, darunter der populäre Akademiker Jean-Jacques Henner (1829–1905), aber ihr Mann, Auguste Cuoq, fand die meisten von ihnen inakzeptabel. Diese Ähnlichkeit war unter denen, die er abgelehnt, berichtet, weil er fühlte, dass es nicht angemessen vermittelt seine Frau Schönheit. Courbet scheint das Bild zu seiner eigenen Zufriedenheit im Jahre 1857 beendet zu haben, das Datum, das er ihm im Katalog der Einzelausstellung, die er 1867 in Paris montiert hatte, zugewiesen hat.
