Cuando esta pintura fue mostrada en el Salón de 1866, algunos críticos censuraron la "falta de gusto" de Courbet, así como la pose "ungainly" de su modelo y el pelo "dishevelado". Sin embargo, no fueron unánimes, y el Estado francés consideró brevemente comprarlo. El propio Courbet escribió: "Después de veinticinco años de lucha, todavía estoy luchando; y hoy todavía estoy haciendo exactamente el mismo tipo de pintura que en el principio desató todo el mundo oficial contra mí... " La imagen provocativa encontró favor con una generación más joven de artistas. Manet comenzó su versión del tema (89.21.3) el mismo año; y Cézanne aparentemente llevó una pequeña fotografía del presente trabajo en su cartera.
