This is Courbet’s first depiction of a woman engaged in an act of self-regard. In 1860, when he exhibited this painting and two landscapes in Brussels, critic Théophile Thoré wrote: "The flesh tones are of rare subtlety and recall the work of the greatest colorists, even [Italian Renaissance artist] Correggio. One may find that M. Courbet’s style is vulgar, that he seeks strangeness in his choice of subjects, and whatever you like, but he certainly is a first-rate practitioner and a very striking colorist. Woman with a Mirror is having a profound effect on the group of young artists in Brussels who are interested in new developments of every kind."
