Si pensa che questo allenamento sia stato dipinto dal giovane Courbet poco dopo il suo arrivo a Parigi nel 1839, quando studiò per diversi mesi con il barone Charles de Steuben (1788-1856) e poi all'Académie Suisse. In un'epoca in cui i temi tratti dall'antichità e la Bibbia si trovavano alla testa di una gerarchia consolidata dei soggetti, il rendering riuscito del corpo maschile non coperto era un punto di riferimento della formazione di un artista. Poche opere dei primi anni di Courbet sopravvivono, e le origini di questo dipinto rimangono oscure.
