Se cree que este ejercicio de entrenamiento fue pintado por el joven Courbet poco después de su llegada a París en 1839, cuando estudió durante varios meses con el barón Charles de Steuben (1788-1856) y luego en la Académie Suisse. En una época en que los temas extraídos de la antigüedad y la Biblia se situaban en la cabeza de una jerarquía establecida de temas, la exitosa representación del cuerpo masculino no cerrado era un referente de la formación de un artista. Pocos de estos trabajos de los primeros años de Courbet sobreviven, y los orígenes de esta pintura siguen siendo oscuros.
