Questo dipinto, mostrato al Salone del 1857, raffigura il tenore Louis Gueymard nella sua parte più famosa, il ruolo del titolo dell'opera di Meyerbeer Robert le Diable. L'ambientazione è la caverna dove Robert gioca dadi con due servi del diavolo mentre suo padre, Bertram, un genio malvagio, guarda avanti. Robert canta sui pericoli della lussuria per l'oro nella celebre aria "L'or est une chimère" (Gold è solo un'illusione). Courbet respinse i soggetti storicizzanti favoriti da molti dei suoi contemporanei. Ma qui il suo abbraccio del presente assunse la sensazione di un moderno pezzo teatrale ambientato nel Medioevo.
