Dieses Gemälde, das auf dem Salon von 1857 gezeigt wird, zeigt den Tenor Louis Gueymard in seinem berühmtesten Teil, die Titelrolle von Meyerbeers Oper Robert le Diable. Die Einstellung ist die Höhle, in der Robert Würfel mit zwei Dienern des Teufels spielt, während sein Vater Bertram, ein böses Genie, aufsieht. Robert singt über die Gefahren der Lust auf Gold in der gefeierten Arie "L'or est une chimère" (Gold ist nur eine Illusion). Courbet lehnte die historischen Subjekte ab, die von vielen seiner Zeitgenossen begünstigt wurden. Aber hier nahm seine Umarmung der Gegenwart die Gestalt eines modernen Theaterstücks im Mittelalter an.
