Courbet dipinse questo lavoro durante una visita intensamente produttiva a Trouville con James McNeill Whistler da settembre fino a novembre 1865; in una lettera a suo padre, l'artista si vantava di aver eseguito "trentacinque dipinti" in pochissimo tempo, che "stunned tutti". Nella sua scelta di soggetto, Courbet ha seguito sulla scia di Eugène Isabey, Johan Barthold Jongkind e Eugène Boudin; ma a differenza di molte delle tele eseguite all'epoca, questa barca da pesca, truccata e riempita di attrezzature, è il fuoco della composizione piuttosto che un elemento subordinato. Nel 1899, questa divenne la prima opera di Courbet ad entrare nella collezione del Museo.
