Courbet malte diese Arbeit während eines intensiv produktiven Besuchs in Trouville mit James McNeill Whistler von September bis November 1865; in einem Brief an seinen Vater rühmte der Künstler, dass er "dreißigfünf Gemälde" in kürzester Zeit hingerichtet hatte, die "stimmte alle". In seiner Wahl des Themas folgte Courbet im Zuge von Eugène Isabey, Johan Barthold Jongkind und Eugène Boudin; aber im Gegensatz zu vielen der damals ausgeführten Leinwände, ist dieses Fischerboot, rigged und gefüllt mit Ausrüstung, der Fokus der Komposition statt eines untergeordneten Elements. Im Jahre 1899 wurde dies das erste Werk von Courbet, um in die Sammlung des Museums einzusteigen.
