Anton Kerner von Marilaun, Professor für Botanik, beauftragte 1891 Gustav Klimt, ein Porträt seiner Frau Marie Kerner von Marilaun, geb. Ebner Gräfin von Rofenstein und verwitweter Gräfin von Wolkenstein zu malen. Klimt wurde nicht befohlen, sie in Wirklichkeit zu malen, sondern erhielt ein Foto von 1862 als Referenz, das Marie Kerner als Braut zeigt. Es war keine ungewöhnliche Kommission für Klimt, ein Porträt aus einem Foto zu malen. Andere Porträts des Künstlers
