Anton Kerner von Marilaun, professore di botanica, commissionò a Gustav Klimt nel 1891 un ritratto della moglie Marie Kerner von Marilaun, nata Ebner Gräfin von Rofenstein e vedova Gräfin von Wolkenstein. Klimt non fu ordinato di dipingere in realtà, ma diede una fotografia scattata nel 1862 come riferimento che mostrava Marie Kerner come sposa.
