Anton Kerner von Marilaun, professeur de botanique, charge Gustav Klimt en 1891 de peindre un portrait de son épouse Marie Kerner von Marilaun, née Ebner Gräfin von Rofenstein et veuve Gräfin von Wolkenstein. Klimt n'a pas reçu l'ordre de la peindre en réalité, mais a donné une photo prise en 1862 comme référence montrant Marie Kerner en tant que mariée.
