Klimt reçut probablement la commission de peindre un portrait de Marie Breunig, épouse du propriétaire d'une grande boulangerie viennoise, vers 1894. Le portrait grand format est sans aucun doute le point culminant d'un style utilisé par le maître-artiste au début des années 1890. Ce style démontre une précision étonnante dans Klimt
