Secondo fonti bibliche, Salome accettò di danzare davanti a suo padre, Erode II, re di Giudea, in cambio di ricevere la testa di Giovanni Battista. Moreau ha trattato il soggetto circa quindici volte in olio. La maggior parte di questi dipinti si concentra sulla drammatica apparizione della testa durante la danza o la sua presentazione in seguito, ma la seduttrice qui appare quasi innocente, allungando il suo corpo e lo sguardo lontano dalla testa sanguinante, che brilla con una luce santa.
