Laut biblischen Quellen, Salome vereinbart, vor ihrem Vater zu tanzen, Herod II, König von Judea, im Austausch für die Aufnahme des abgetrennten Kopfes von Johannes der Täufer. Moreau behandelte das Thema etwa fünfzehn Mal in Öl. Die meisten dieser Gemälde konzentrieren sich auf die dramatische Erscheinung des Kopfes während des Tanzes oder seine Präsentation nachher, aber die Verführerin hier erscheint fast unschuldig, streckt ihren Körper und Blick vom blutigen Kopf weg, der mit einem heiligen Licht leuchtet.
