L'uomo in questo ritratto indossa la livrea reale inglese, un'uniforme composta da un cappello rosso e un cappotto ricamato con le iniziali di Enrico VIII (HR), che lo identifica come un artigiano o partecipante nella famiglia reale. Avendosi raffigurato in quel costume, la babysitter di Holbein ha sottolineato la sua lealtà e servizio a corte. Il ritratto probabilmente una volta aveva un coperchio dipinto protettivo.
