Edoardo, unico figlio legittimo di Enrico VIII, nacque il 12 ottobre 1537 e incoronò Edoardo VI nel 1547. Questo ritratto mostra il futuro re a sei anni, quando era ancora il duca di Cornovaglia. Fu successivamente adattato in costume per riflettere la statura di Edward al momento della sua incoronazione. Il formato arrotondato e la posizione del sitter evocano la monetazione dell’antichità classica, ammirata alla corte Tudor. Il pannello era considerato un lavoro autografo di Holbein. Le prove tecniche, tuttavia, suggeriscono che è stato dipinto dopo la sua morte da un assistente di laboratorio, basato su un progetto precedente dal maestro.
