Dans einem barockisierenden, opulenten Kleid sitzt Helene von Racowitza (1845-1911) in einem Buch lesend an einem Tisch. Gemalt wurde das Bild vom österreichischen Künstler Hans Makart, dem whitigsten Portraitisten des Wiener Großbürgertums der Gründerzeit. Sein vor allem von Tizian und Rubens beeinflusster Stil ist von überbordender Sinnlichkeit sowie großem, durch opulentes Dekor bestimmtem Pathos gekennzeichnet. „En jene Zeit auch fiel es, daß ich ihm [Hans Makart] zu allem möglichen saß, était ihm durch den Kopf ging: cald sollte es eine griechische Bacchantin (...) – cald eine Venezianer Dogin, erinnert sich Helene von Racowitza in ihrer Autobiografie lebhaft an die Sitzungen bei Hans Makart, der seine Modelle häufig in historiserende Gewänder kleidete.
