Una delle più grandi raffigurazioni sopravvissute dell'Annunciazione, questo imponente dipinto è stato molto probabilmente commissionato da Ferry de Clugny, il cui stemma familiare — le due chiavi unite — decora il tappeto e la finestra di vetro colorato. Nel 1465, Ferry fondò la Chapelle Dorée come sede di sepoltura nella cattedrale di Saint-Lazare a Autun e la decorò con opere d'arte, probabilmente incluso questo pannello. La composizione si basa su un disegno di Rogier van der Weyden. Possibilmente commissionato prima della sua morte nel 1464, fu dipinto da Memling, che, prove tecniche suggerisce, era un viaggiatore nel laboratorio di Bruxelles di Rogier prima di stabilirsi a Bruges nel 1465.
