La composizione di questa piccola rotonda della Vergine che succhia il Cristo Bambino era molto popolare, diffusa attraverso schemi di laboratorio che datano ai primi del XV secolo. Memling ha arricchito il prototipo aggiungendo un ampio paesaggio alberato. I tondini come questo erano spesso appesi sopra le teste dei letti, dove servivano come una benedizione su una coppia sposata o come un focus per la preghiera personale. Il telaio e l'immagine dipinta sono scolpiti da un unico pezzo di legno.
