Die Komposition dieses kleinen Rundels der Jungfrau, die das Christuskind saugen, war sehr beliebt, verbreitet durch Werkstattmuster, die bis zum frühen fünfzehnten Jahrhundert. Memling bereicherte den Prototyp durch eine ausgedehnte Waldlandschaft. Roundels wie diese wurden oft über den Kopf der Betten aufgehängt, wo sie als Segen über ein Ehepaar oder als Fokus auf persönliches Gebet dienten. Der Rahmen und das bemalte Bild sind aus einem einzigen Stück Holz geschnitzt.
