Nel corso dei suoi viaggi come artista, Hans von Aachen ha visitato Venezia, Roma e Firenze. Dal 1596 fu a Praga, dove servì come Pittore di Camera presso la corte di Rudolph II. Accanto a Spranger e Heintz, von Aachen è considerato un importante rappresentante della pittura di Rudolfine. Questa tendenza è caratterizzata da un'elegante rappresentazione delle figure, anche basata sullo stile di Parmigianino, come si può vedere su un attento esame dell'opera attuale. Il disegno può essere collegato ad un dipinto del 1602, che l'imperatore commissionò all'artista. Oggi adorna il Museo Ermitage di San Pietroburgo e presenta un'allegoria interpretata come pace, che permette la fertilità e il fiorire delle scienze. (Sonja Brink)
