Harriet Goodhue Hosmer conoció a los escritores Robert y Elizabeth Browning en Roma en el invierno de 1853. Poco después, el artista pidió permiso para crear un reparto de sus manos. Los Brownings acordaron su petición, siempre que Hosmer haga el reparto ella misma. La escultura resultante evoca el legendario amor y devoción de los Brownings en un simple gesto de unidad. Los tamaños relativos de las manos y las esposas en las muñecas nos permiten distinguir macho de hembra. Hosmer creó varias versiones de la escultura en yeso y en bronce. Otro miembro de su círculo, el autor Nathaniel Hawthorne, hizo referencia a este trabajo directamente en su novela “El Faun Mármol”: “Las Manos Clasificadas de Harriet Hosmer de Browning y su esposa simbolizan la individualidad y la unión heroica de dos vidas altamente poéticas. ”
