Harriet Goodhue Hosmer incontrò gli scrittori Robert e Elizabeth Browning a Roma nell'inverno del 1853. Poco dopo, l'artista cercò il permesso di creare un cast le loro mani. I Brownings accettarono la sua richiesta, a condizione che Hosmer facesse il cast. La scultura risultante evoca il leggendario amore e la devozione dei Brownings in un semplice gesto di unità. Le dimensioni relative delle mani e dei polsini ai polsi ci permettono di distinguere il maschio dalla femmina. Hosmer ha creato diverse versioni della scultura in gesso e in bronzo. Un altro membro del loro cerchio, autore Nathaniel Hawthorne, ha fatto riferimento a questo lavoro direttamente nel suo romanzo “The Marble Faun”: “Harriet Hosmer’s Clasped Hands of Browning e sua moglie simboleggiano l’individualità e l’unione eroica di due vite altamente poetiche. ”
