Eine Smithsonian Reproduktion von Harriet Powers original “Story Quilt”. Harriet Powers wurde ein Sklave geboren und lebte in der Nähe von Athen, Georgia. 1886, als Harriet 49 Jahre alt war, hatte sie ihre erste Steppdecke beendet, um auf der Clarke County Cotton Fair zu zeigen. Sie kombinierte den afrikanischen Stil von applique, mit europäischen Stil Nähte, um einzigartige “story quilts” zu schaffen, die heute als bemerkenswerte Stücke der Volkskunst und Geschichte erhalten. Ihre Geschichte Quitten zeigt biblische Geschichten und lokale Geschichten. Ihre Bibel Quilt ist im Smithsonian National Museum of American History und Pictorial Quilt im Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
