Ter Brugghen adottò il soggetto di figure di mezza lunghezza vestite in modo flamboyantly suonando strumenti musicali dal lavoro di Caravaggio e i suoi seguaci romani immediati. Questo tipo di immagine di una figura a grandezza naturale, a metà lunghezza che suona uno strumento musicale divenne popolare tra i seguaci Utrecht di Caravaggio nei primi anni 1620. Ter Brugghen fu a Roma per circa dieci anni dal 1604, dove studiò l'opera di Caravaggio e dei suoi seguaci.
