Il trattato di Munster ha segnato la fine della Guerra di Ottanta anni (1568-1648) e una fine completa e definitiva al dominio spagnolo sui Paesi Bassi. Probabilmente intorno a questo tempo, Marte addormentato è stato posto nel suo contesto politico — e nella sua cornice attuale. Le armi sono incatenate insieme. Gli strumenti della guerra, resi inutilizzabili in questo modo, si riferiscono direttamente al dio addormentato della guerra. Il pannello è stato esteso su entrambi i lati quando è stato posizionato nella cornice reale.
